7 Things I Wish I Knew Before Visiting Curaçao
Curaçao is one of the most beautiful islands I’ve ever visited, and after their historic World Cup debut, it’s probably on your travel list too. With crystal-clear blue water, colorful streets, incredible beaches, and some of the best food I’ve had in the Caribbean, it’s easy to see why this island is gaining so much attention. Before you book your trip, here are seven things I wish I knew before visiting Curaçao.
1. Curaçao Is a Great Destination Year-Round
One of the best things about Curaçao is that it’s located below the hurricane belt, making it a great Caribbean destination throughout the year. It’s the C in the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao). These islands are much less likely to be impacted by hurricanes than many other Caribbean islands. That means you can plan your trip with a little more peace of mind even during hurricane season.
2. Complete Your Digital Immigration Card Before You Fly
Every visitor is required to complete Curaçao’s Digital Immigration Card before arriving on the island. The form is completely free, but be careful not to land on a third-party site that will charge a fee to submit it on your behalf. Save your money and complete the form on the official site yourself before your flight so you’re ready when you land.
3. You Don’t Need to Exchange Your Money
The official currency in Curaçao is the Caribbean guilder, but U.S. dollars are accepted at most hotels, restaurants, shops, and attractions. This makes traveling around the island incredibly convenient for visitors from the United States. Just don’t be surprised if you receive your change back in guilders.
4. Rent a Car to Experience the Island
If you really want to experience everything Curaçao has to offer, you must rent a car. There is no Uber on the island, taxis can be expensive, and many of the best beaches, beach clubs, and hidden gems are spread across different parts of the island. The good news is that they drive on the right side of the road, so it feels very familiar if you’re visiting from the United States.
5. Bring a Reusable Water Bottle
You don’t need to spend money buying bottled water throughout your trip because Curaçao’s tap water is perfectly safe to drink. It’s clean, refreshing, and tastes great. Bringing a reusable water bottle is an easy way to stay hydrated while saving money and reducing plastic waste.
6. Getting Around Is Easy If You Speak English
Language won’t be a barrier to getting around during your trip because most people in Curaçao speak English. You’ll also hear Papiamentu, Dutch, and Spanish spoken throughout the island, reflecting Curaçao’s rich cultural heritage. Whether you’re ordering food, asking for directions, or chatting with locals, communication is usually effortless.
7. Don’t Miss the Local Food Scene
You already know I have to talk about the food! While the resort restaurants are convenient, some of the island’s best meals are found at locally owned restaurants and neighborhood cafés. Venture beyond the resort areas and you’ll be rewarded with incredible flavors, fresh seafood, Caribbean specialties, and a much more authentic taste of Curaçao.
